Our goal is to make your journey to becoming a qualified HGV driver as easy and straightforward as possible.

Step-by-Step HGV License Process Explained

Getting your HGV license involves several important steps. Here’s a simple guide to help you understand what’s involved:

  • Apply for your provisional HGV licence, after successfully undertaking a medical exam
  • Study for the theory test and pass the DVSA theory tests
  • Complete practical driver training, including reversing, and driver CPC knowledge,
  • Pass the practical driving tests and obtain your LGV driving licence and the Driver CPC, to get your Driver Qualification Card.

Let’s look at each step in more detail.

What You Need Before You Start

Before beginning your HGV license journey, there are a few things you need to have in place:

  1. You must be at least 18 years old
  2. You need a valid UK driving license for cars
  3. You should be physically fit and healthy.
  4. You need to have the right attitude and motivation to learn.
  5. And have funds in place to cover the training and test fees.

At Wallace School of Transport, we help you meet all these requirements and prepare for each step of the process as well as introduce you to Finance Options if you want to borrow the money to pay for your training.

Step 1: Apply for Your Provisional HGV Licence

The first step is to apply for a provisional HGV license. You can go online through the official government website to obtain the application forms, or by coming to our office we can supply you with forms and organise a doctor for your medical – see our Quick Start by clicking here

Step 2: Pass Your Medical

You need to pass a medical to prove you are fit to drive large vehicles. During the medical the doctor checks your eyesight, hearing, and overall health. It’s an important step to ensure you can drive safely on the roads. Wallace School of Transport can help you prepare for and understand what to expect during your medical assessment – see our Quick Start by clicking here

Step 3: Study for the Theory Test

While you are waiting from your Provisional HGV Licence to be issued you can start to study.  Theory tests cover road safety, driving laws, and best practices for HGV drivers. Studying is essential, and we can provide DVSA recommending learning material online and through an app to help you succeed.

Step 4: Take the Theory Test

Once you’ll receive your new driving licence with your provisional entitlement showing on the Gov. UK website, you can you take your theory tests at a DVSA testing centre. The Module 1 theory test includes multiple-choice questions and a hazard perception video presentation. Passing these tests is a key milestone on your journey to becoming an HGV driver.  Also see Step 6.

Step 5: Practical Driver Training

After passing the Module 1 theory tests, we can arrange your intensive training course when you can begin practical driver training. This is when you get hands-on lessons with Wallace experienced and NRI qualified instructors who teach you how to handle large vehicles safely and confidently. Wallace School of Transport offers expert practical training tailored to your needs, ensuring you gain the skills required to pass your driving test.  Some drivers like to buy their Digital Tachograph Card (£32) at this point as you’ll need it as soon as you become a working driver.

Step 6: The CPC Certification

The Driver Certificate of Professional Competence (CPC) is a mandatory qualification for professional HGV drivers. For drivers who obtained their car test after 1997 it involves completing another theory test, Module 2 Case Study and a Module 4 practical training that covers knowledge, regulations and professional standards. Wallace School of Transport is accredited by DVSA to deliver CPC training and tests, helping you meet all legal requirements.

Step 7: Passing the Practical Test

The final step is passing your practical driving tests. We’ll prepare you and organise your Reversing Test, which will be closely followed by your On Road practical driving test.  These tests assess your ability to operate an HGV safely in real-world driving conditions. Once you pass, you will receive your full LGV license to drive HGV’s.  And as soon as you’ve completed your Module 4 Driver CPC Practical Test and received your CPC Card, and you’ll be ready to start your career as a professional driver.
