Why We Love Trucks (And You Should, Too!)

10th September 2016

Everything we eat, drink, wear and use has spent time on the back of a lorry. Homes, places of work, hospitals, shops, restaurants and schools all rely on an efficient cost-effective, transport and logistics network.

Did you know?

Each year, lorries carry enough beer to fill Wembley stadium. In one supermarket delivery, a single 44-tonne lorry carries the equivalent volume of 400 cans of food.

85% of everything we buy, eat, wear and use is moved by a UK-registered lorry. This contributes £74.5bn to the UK economy.

Lorries quite literally move the UK economy.

Without lorries and their drivers, supermarket shelves would be empty, homes would not be built and manufacturing plants would grind to a halt. The logistics industry employs more than 2.2 million people and, contributes £74.5bn to the UK economy.

The positive contribution that drivers and their trucks is often overlooked even though they have a huge impact on the lives of everyone in the UK.

The British public should be proud of its haulage industry. Hauliers work hard, are efficient and innovative.

National Lorry Week provides an opportunity for the industry to reach out to the public and politicians as never before to highlight their massive and positive contribution to daily life and raise the profile of the UK’s haulage industry, both as an essential service provider and as an excellent, and often overlooked, career opportunity

Some hauliers will be taking their vehicles to local schools, colleges and into town centres; giving everyone the chance to get up close and personal with a truck.  Other operators across the UK will be opening their doors (and their yards) for National Lorry Week and invite the public, the government and potential future HGV heroes with the opportunity to appreciate the lorry.

Invited visitors can get up close and personal with a lorry; meet operators and drivers and hear their stories; learn about a career as an HGV driver and other industry-related jobs, and find out what our industry is doing to reduce its impact on the environment.

It’s important to raise awareness of the logistics industry so everyone can begin to understand the vital role this sector plays in delivering daily life to every part of the UK

Wallace School of Transport - Love the Lorry - National Lorry Week

Could you be inspired to become an HGV Hero?

There are loads of opportunities open in the logistics industry.  Driving is an excellent career opportunity that must be appreciated, and there’s plenty of driving work out there for anyone who wants to move into a career in logistics.  The industry is going through a period of renewal and desperately needs more drivers; women as well as men – That could be you!

But the industry is more than just drivers.  Warehouse operatives, mechanics, technicians, IT specialists, transport managers and marketing experts - the haulage and logistics industry has something for everyone.

The road haulage industry makes your world turn - so why not become a part of it?
