HOW TO APPLY FOR PROVISIONAL LGV/PCV

LGV Licence Details

If you passed your car test before January 1997 then you probably have LGV C1 / 7.5 tonne entitlement on your car licence.

Drivers aged 21 or over without LGV C1 entitlement can skip a grade and go straight to LGV C (HGV Class 2)

You must pass LGV C (HGV Class 2) before obtaining C+E (HGV Class 1). After obtaining your full LGV C, with provisional C+E entitlement, you can progress on to C+E without delay by using the same LGV C training vehicle attached to one our DrawBar Trailers or our Articulated Truck with 13.6 meter Tri-axle Trailer.

The DSA also permits LGV C licence holders to obtain a full Manual PCV licence by passing a test on a PCV Automatic Coach.

PCV Licence Details

If you passed your car test before January 1997 you may already hold a D1 restricted licence for social and pleasure use. However, if you are being paid to drive a minibus (i.e. for hire of reward) you will need to pass a PCV D1 test.

If you undertake training and pass with all-types PCV D you will give obtain a licence to drive any Passenger Carrying Vehicle - Manual and Automatic Bus or Coach, Single or Double Decker and Minibuses.

However, passing a test using a vehicle with an automatic gear box means you would not be entitled to drive a manual transmission.

Holders of a PCV automatic licence can upgrade, without any delay, to an all-types PCV licence by sitting a test on a manual coach (and avoid taking another theory test)

Or get two licences at the same time, because on passing your LGV C (HGV Class 2) test you will also upgrade your automatic PCV licence into an all-types PCV Manual Coach Licence.  But remember you will need to obtain LGV Provisional Entitlement, if you don't already hold it, and pass a LGV Theory Test before LGV training can commence.
