| The
Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 and 1992 and the
P.U.W.E.R 1998 legislation require all Employers to
be responsible for the Health and Safety of their employees.
This includes driving any sort of vehicle while at work.
The legislation requires employers
to conduct risk assessments and provide training as
appropriate. You must also provide safe working conditions
and practices. Records of these
actions must be available for inspection. In matters
concerning driving, Wallace Drivesafe can carry out
all of these functions for your Company.
The implications of this legislation
are that if one of your employees is injured at work
(even if it was the employees own fault), the Company
must be able to demonstrate it has taken reasonable
action to ensure the driver’s safe driving and
has complied with the legislation. If it cannot, any
fine or imprisonment of the Directors will be much more
severe.
It is no legal defence to say
“Fred’s worked with us for 15 years and
he’s never has an accident before!”

your premises using your vehicles in your normal operating environment.

FINANCIAL BENEFITS
Trained drivers provide you with better MPG and drive sympathetically,
reducing service and repair costs, helping maintain residual values.

managers?. Be sure your vehicles are being driven in a safe and
considerate manner.
LEGAL COMPLIANCE
Assessments, training and supervision are fundamental aspects of
Health & Safety at Work legislation and PUWER (1998) regulations.
Forthcoming legislation will make individuals within your organisation
directly accountable for any unsafe actions of their employees.
If supervision or training is found to be inadequate fines and ultimately
imprisonment may result.
Training Programmes for Wallace DriveSafe
Wallace DriveSafe programmes are divided into
three areas that meet most companies’ requirements. However
we would be pleased to provide bespoke arrangements on request.
PRE-EMPLOYMENT ASSESSMENT
Before an offer of employment is made to an employee,
whose duties will include driving; we strongly advise a driving
assessment.
Wallace DriveSafe assessments establish the driving
competence of the applicant and highlight any concerns regarding
the ability of the candidate to drive safely. Our findings are confirmed
in writing confidentially, directly to you.
Pre-Employment Assessments at your location for
half-day or full day can normally be arranged at short notice. Or
with approximately one weeks notice individual drivers Pre-Employment
Assessments can be conducted at our Wembley centre
IN-SERVICE SAFETY ASSESSMENT
AND TRAINING
This programme is intended to review the driving
ability of your existing drivers and provide remedial training where
necessary. We concentrate on the safe handling of the vehicle, together
with the drivers’ ability to drive defensively, i.e. to recognise
hazards in good time and implement plans to deal with them.
Towards the end of the assessment/training day
the driver will be reviewed. Any aspects of their driving that is
not to a safe standard will be identified and confirmed in a confidential
report directly to you.
REFRESHER TRAINING
Designed to follow on after the either of the
above, refresher training will look at all aspects of the candidates
driving that caused concern.
At the end of the refresher training a further
report will be submitted for your Health and Safety Records.
Driving with Wallace DriveSafe
During In-Service Safety and Training we promote
Defensive Driving techniques. These encourage a systematic approach
to driving that allows for other road users who may, either deliberately
or accidentally, demonstrate errors and omissions in their driving.
For example:
When driving along a straight road, in the event
of another driver waiting to emerge from a side road, the defensive
driver should check to see that the body language of the driver
waiting to emerge is such that he is aware of your presence.
If you are unsure if the driver waiting to emerge
has not seen you, defensive action needs to be taken. You could
consider slowing down, adjusting your position and sounding your
horn with appropriate mirror checks prior.
The specific techniques involved in defensive
driving are:
- Full daily vehicle checks
- Preparations for a journey
- Consideration for prevailing weather conditions
i.e. visibility, temperature and road surface
- Forward observation
- Hazard awareness, static and moving
- Defensive driving plan (MSM PSL)
- Carry out driving plans
- Dealing with other road users
Before In-Service Safety assessment and Training,
we ask you to highlight any areas of concern that you may have in
your drivers’ normal work related driving activities.
Our instructor will select similar roads and conditions
for assessment and training if it is impractical to drive on the
actual roads and routes your drivers’ use.
