C1E Trailer Training

C1+E Trailer Towing Training – Recovery, Utility & Arborist Drivers

LGV C1E - 7.5 tonne and Trailer Training

Gaining C1E entitlement is very popular for drivers of breakdown and recovery vehicles, and with tree surgeons and Landscape Gardeners who need to tow specialist equipment such as Chippers, and with utility workers needing to tow trailers to carry equipment such as a generator or mini-digger.

And many people obtain C1E licence for leisure, especially for towing specialist trailers, for example for towing a boat or a stack of canoes, for towing jet-ski or towing a horsebox.

Whatever your driving needs the first step is to check you obtain the correct licence for the size and type of vehicle you’re using, and how it’s being used.

Who needs the C1E licence?

Drivers who passed their driving test for a category B licence after 1 January 1997 stopped receiving automatic entitlement to drive category C1 and C1+E vehicles.

A vehicle with a gross vehicle weight of up to 3,500kg can be driven by a B licence (ordinary private car licence) holder.

However, for vehicles between 3,500kg and 7,500kg drivers need a LGV C1 licence which also allows them to tow a small trailer of up to a maximum gross weight of 750kg.

So, if you need to drive a vehicle OVER 3.5 tonne with a trailer of OVER 750kgs you are going to need to obtain LGV C1E entitlement.

And if you are in the Vehicle Recovery Business, and for example, your recovery vehicle has a GVW of 17,000kg towing any broken-down vehicle over 750kg GVW would need to be driven by a driver with full C+E entitlement (i.e. the old HGV Class 1 Licence).

Driver Certificate of Professional Competence

Driver CPC is applicable to people who work and earn a living as a driver using their LGV C1, C, C1E and C+E license, and that includes drivers involved in vehicle recovery.

Drivers of recovery vehicles who gained their vocational LGV C1, C1E, C or CE licence before 10 September 2009 have ‘acquired rights’. Since September 2014 however, those people who want to use their licence to work as a professional driver have needed a Driver CPC (and obtain a Driver Qualification Card) which can be achieved by completing 35-hours of periodic training.

However,  people who want to use their licence to work as a professional driver, who passed their Car Test and LGV C1, C1E, C or CE after 10th September will need to obtain their Driver CPC by passing two tests.  We can help you with this.

And the Driver CPC (the DQC card) needs to be carried at all times whilst driving professionally.
