Dangerous Goods Driver Training

Drivers and companies need to understand and must comply with legislation to help keep the transportation of dangerous goods safe. Legislation is in place to ensure drivers gain specialist knowledge and skills and understand the practical application of specific health and safety techniques.

Employers are responsible for making sure existing staff are fully qualified and that new staff have already or are willing to gain relevant qualifications.  

Anyone new to the qualification will need an INITIAL course. Existing ADR holders can take REFRESHER courses. Certificates are valid for 5 years. In the final year prior to expiration, a short re-certification course re-qualifies the driver for a further 5 years.

Courses vary in size and duration as drivers and employers can choose specific classes for specific roles.  Remember ADR training hours count towards driver hours.  Also whilst taking ADR training this can count towards Driver CPC Periodic training.

The ADR qualification is divided into classes, commonly known as Core, Packages, Tankers and the seven common classes.  Our comprehensive training includes basic first aid and fire training. It is both theoretical and practical and covers all vehicles and most types of loads.

• Core: Basic syllabus for carrying any class of dangerous goods in Road tankers, tank containers, packages, drums, cylinders and loose in bulk
• Tanks: For carrying any class of dangerous goods, in road tankers or other tanker containers    
• Packages & Loose in Bulk: For carrying any class of dangerous goods in (sacks, drums, cylinders, cartons) and loose in bulk (skips, tipper or dust cart bodies etc)
• Class 1: Explosives (an optional extra to standard courses)
• Class 2: Gases; compressed, liquefied, dissolved under pressure or refrigerated
• Class 3: Flammable liquids
• Class 4: Flammable solids, substances liable to spontaneous combustion
• Class 5: Oxidising substances and organic peroxides
• Class 6: Toxic, harmful and infectious substances
• Class 7: Radioactive (sorry we do not provide this class)
• Class 8: Corrosives - Acids and Alkalis
• Class 9: Miscellaneous dangerous substances and articles, e.g. asbestos, PCBs and any substance or article not covered by the other classes

Examinations are conducted by SQA in a multiple choice format.  Successful candidates are certificated to carry dangerous and hazardous materials (and explosives if taken as an additional class).  Courses and exams are held in Wembley every four to six weeks. 

We also offer training courses at different locations occasionally across the country and we are able to offer on-site training for companies who require training for several drivers.  Our training is carried out by our partner K Training, an SQA exam centre.
